Six Days of Sun = Mental Health Mega Refresh

The last time I had a holiday was in September 2022. I've not had so much as a weekend break since then. And so, I had my first holiday in a little over 10 years this past week and spent 6 days in Fuerteventura. It was supposed to be for Christian's 30th birthday, but he never ended up traveling for personal reasons and so what was meant to be a group of seven dwindled to a trio, we packed our bags, and off we went.

Now to be fair, I am not big into holidays. I don't crave one every year as some do, and I'm certainly no sun worshipper. However...

I didn't realize just how much this was needed. Not just time off work — I've had plenty of that — but to actually get away from life’s problems and chores. To actually sit and relax and enjoy the time without worrying about tidying up, washing pots, going shopping, and visiting family. It was bliss. And I can't wait to do it again. Maybe for a few days extra.

I even managed to find that long-lost fun part of myself that didn't care too much what people thought and sang badly — very badly — to karaoke. It took a chunk of alcohol but you know, it was worth every penny.

The weather was beautiful minus some 30mph winds over the weekend but it was still warm enough to rock shorts and flip-flops in the day, and a hoody in the evening. Perfectly pleasant.

And one of the best things was making a new friend...

Sadly all good things must come to an end so we hauled ourselves back to the airport on Wednesday and landed back in a dull and 4ºc Manchester Airport late on. But we came back with new memories, slightly sore backs — a combination of sunburn and being old before our time — and a very rough plan for a cheeky trip to Amsterdam next year. It's also really inspired me to take the girls away. It's a shame that my disinterest in holidays has also meant that they have missed out on something I'm sure they would love. Thankfully they have at least been away with their respective mums, so I am grateful for that.

I can't wait to do it all again.
